AHF Honors Dan Henroid With Lifetime Achievement Award

Foodservice Director, Educator, Researcher Lauded for his Career-Spanning Work

McLean, VA – August 30, 2017 –The Association for Healthcare Foodservice (AHF) announced Dan Henroid, Jr. is the winner of its 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication and endless efforts to educate patients and retail customers about the important link between nutrition and overall health. The award was presented at the AHF 2017 Annual Conference at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in the Washington, DC area.

“Dan stands out as a real pillar of our community working tirelessly across numerous areas from patient food service, to retail outlets as well as in- and out-patient nutrition services, to improve the overall health and well-being of anyone touched by the UCSF Medical Center Department of Nutrition and Food Services,” said AHF President Julie Jones, Director of Nutrition Services at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

“I feel so fortunate to be a part of a unique department that has the potential to personally and directly improve the day of anyone who walks into the medical center,” said Dan Henroid.  “It’s a very gratifying and humbling role to play.”

Dan is the director of the Department of Nutrition and Food Services and serves as the sustainability officer for UCSF Health. His operational responsibilities include all patient dining, retail food services, catering and conference services, culinary services, inpatient and outpatient nutrition services, and retail services. He also serves in key leadership roles in the robotic TUG system, the Interactive Patient Experience (IPX) committee, and other committees within the health system and university.

Prior to UCSF, Dan was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Houston and was a Foodservice and Lodging Specialist at Iowa State University. During this time in academia, he developed his passion for food safety research issues particularly in retail food environments. He has conducted many research and applied projects including modeling the efficacy of novel hand hygiene tracking systems and the application of hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) systems in food operations. His other research interests include sustainable food systems and health and wellness education in food operations.
