Following with this month’s theme of work-life balance, AHF celebrated Pi Day (March 14) with a pie demonstration webinar. Attendees first learned a bit about the history of the pie, like the fact that the Greeks first created the pastry shell, but that the Romans were the first to create an actual pie and that it wasn’t until the 1500’s that fruit pies were first made in England. Did you know that the first cherry pie was created during the rein of Queen Elizabeth I?

After learning those fun facts, Chef Katie McCurdy, culinary educator at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, began the pie demonstration, providing attendees with tips and tricks about how to make a flaky crust and how to best make substitutions with the dough. Chef Katie demonstrated making both a sweet, blueberry, lemon, lavender pie and a savory, chicken, and root vegetable pie offering helpful suggestions and ideas along the way. In the end, both pies looked delicious making all attendees want to run to the kitchen and make a pie or two for themselves!
